Graceful Perseverance: Christmas in Heaven – 12/23/18

Updated: Jan 2, 2019

Welcome to this week’s blog! Today is the eve of Christmas Eve. The eve of Christ’s birth, a glorious, spectacular day in history. I am compelled to share a simple, but complex thought I had the other morning as I awoke.

The first thought that came to mind, and the first words from my lips were: “I wonder what Christmas is like in Heaven?” As my body was awakening, and I was rubbing the sleep from my eyes, I wanted to delve deeper into this question and what it truly meant. It quickly became a topic that I couldn’t comprehend.

I have witnessed and felt the heart breaking experience of having a loved one return home before their time. My third son returned home to be with Christ long before his time, or so we believe. But in Heaven time does not exist. My son returned home in divine timing. I trust and believe my son’s work here had been completed, and it was his calling to return home. I truly believe and have peace in the knowledge that God’s plan is flawless, intentional, purposeful, a beautiful plan that is perfected beyond my own understanding.

So you ask, how does this relate to my thoughts that morning about “Christmas in Heaven?” There have been many poems written about the Heavenly Christmas experience. Each captures its own essence and beauty, but one of my favorites goes like this.

I see the countless Christmas trees around the world below ,With tiny lights like heaven’s stars reflecting on the snow.

The sight is so spectacular please wipe away that tear, For I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.

I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear, But the sounds of music can’t compare with the Christmas choir up here.

I have no words to tell you of the joy their voices bring, For it is beyond description to hear the angels sing.

I know how much you miss me, I see the pain inside your heart

For I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.

I can’t tell you of the splendor or the peace here in this place

Can you just imagine Christmas with our Savior face to face?

I’ll ask him to lift your spirit as I tell you of your love So, then pray for one another as you lift your eyes above.

Please let your hearts be joyful and let your spirit sing For I am spending Christmas in heaven and I’m walking with the King.

This poem “Christmas in Heaven” written by Wanda Bencke has appeared on the Internet in many different forms. The above poem is her original. The author says the poem is based on her true experience. “Lysandra Kay Bencke was my thirteen-year-old handicapped daughter. On Christmas day 1997, Lysandra had a seizure and was in a coma for five days before she died. During those five days, I wrote the poem, ‘Christmas in Heaven.’ I sent it out in belated Christmas cards that year. They also sent it on to other friends and relatives.”

In closing,

For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given…and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. ISAIAH 9:6 KJV

Christmas Blessings,
